Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Print media has played a pivotal role in advocating for social justice, particularly women's rights, by raising awareness, challenging societal norms, and amplifying the voices of marginalized groups. In Gusau Local Government, Zamfara State, where traditional and religious values heavily influence gender roles, print media serves as an essential platform for addressing issues such as gender inequality, access to education, and women's participation in decision-making processes (Bello & Yusuf, 2024). Studies have shown that media advocacy can shift perceptions, inspire policy reforms, and mobilize communities toward gender equity (Ahmed & Garba, 2023). By publishing investigative reports, opinion articles, and stories of empowered women, print media helps combat stereotypes and promote women's empowerment. However, limited literacy levels, cultural resistance, and financial constraints of local publications pose challenges to their advocacy efforts. This study examines the effectiveness of print media in advocating for women's rights in Gusau, exploring its achievements and challenges.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite significant global and national efforts to promote gender equality, women in Gusau Local Government continue to face systemic challenges such as limited access to education, early marriage, and economic marginalization. Print media in the region, while having the potential to advocate for change, is often constrained by cultural resistance, underfunding, and low readership among women. Moreover, there is a lack of empirical studies exploring the extent to which print media contributes to advancing women's rights in Gusau. This study seeks to address this gap by assessing the role of print media in women's rights advocacy in the region.
